Still, William Grant

(11 may. 1895, Woodville, Miss., EE.UU.–3 dic. 1978, Los Ángeles, Cal.).

Compositor estadounidense. En un comienzo tuvo la intención de dedicarse a la medicina, pero a cambio estudió música en el Oberlin College, donde aprendió clarinete, oboe y violín. Estudió composición con George Chadwick (n. 1854–m. 1931) y Edgard Varèse. En la década de 1920 trabajó como arreglista para el director de orquestas de baile Paul Whiteman y para el compositor de bluesW.C. Handy. El estilo temprano de Still era vanguardista (From the Black Belt, 1926), pero 1930 buscó el desarrollo de una música artística afroamericana distintiva en cinco sinfonías (entre ellas su Sinfonía afroamericana, 1931), ballets, óperas, obras corales y para voz solista.
